Georgian Metamorphic Mahogany Extending Dining Table, c.1800 – Expands to Over 8ft, Seats 8 A rare and highly ingenious George III period metamorphic extending dining table, dating to circa 1800, crafted in beautifully figured solid mahogany and retaining an exceptional degree of originality throughout. The table survives in remarkably untouched condition, retaining its original extending framework, leaves, turned legs and elegant brass cup castors exactly as intended over two centuries ago. Its colour and surface have developed naturally through careful long-term use, giving the piece a wonderfully mellow tone and an undisturbed period character rarely encountered in such complete original condition. In its fully extended form, the table opens to just over 8 feet in length, comfortably seating up to eight people. The extension mechanism operates through a sophisticated system of five telescopic bearer stretchers which concertina outward to support the additional leaves — a particularly clever and highly effective piece of Georgian engineering which continues to function smoothly and precisely today. One of the table’s most appealing qualities is its remarkable versatility. When not required at full size, the additional leaves can be removed and the drop leaves folded down, transforming the piece into a far more compact form suitable as a side table, serving table or occasional table. This adaptability would have made the piece especially desirable in the early nineteenth century and remains equally practical in modern interiors today. The pleasingly proportioned turned and reeded legs terminate in particularly attractive original brass cup castors of generous scale and elegant late Georgian form. The castors retain a beautifully aged untouched surface, with crisply moulded petal collars above the wheels and finely engine-turned decoration to the brass, adding a refined decorative quality rarely encountered on more ordinary examples. Beyond their practicality and ease of movement, they contribute greatly to the table’s overall silhouette and are among the most distinctive and appealing features of the piece. Importantly, the table remains highly original throughout. The only alterations are a small number of correctly matched period replacement hinge screws, fitted sympathetically during servicing to ensure the hinges functioned precisely and securely as intended. A rare and exceptionally versatile piece of Georgian furniture, combining intelligent engineering, practicality and elegant period design in a form seldom encountered with such originality intact.
